Junior Boys could almost be looked at as a modern day equivalent to Prefab Sprout. Don’t let that fool you into thinking they should have no place on the pages of Update, mind, for they make a lot of music that is still rhythmically derived – it’s just that a lot of it is delivered relatively quietly and in hushed, vocal tones. There is a serene beauty about this record, though, which shows its sensitive side early on in ‘Playtime’, then more emotively in ‘Kick The Can’. Fans of the boys’ poppier work will enjoy ‘The Reservoir, while some of the songs you can interpret two ways, as they seem to be moving at speeds both fast and slow. It creates an odd sort of tension in their music, and while you’ll either love or hate their approach, you can’t deny its originality.
