‘The Hits’ marks the end of Kelis’ contract with Virgin, and it’s a stunning collection. She sprang to public awareness back in 2000 when the no holds barred ‘Caught Out There’ screamed “I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!” across MTV for what seemed like an eternity. She followed that up with a bevvy of sassy, catchy hit singles, often completely elusive (‘Milkshake’) or groovy (‘Trick Me’). Collaborations with ODB (‘Got Your Money’), Richard X (‘Finest Dreams’), N.E.R.D. (‘Truth Or Dare’) or NAS (‘In Public’) continued to get the best out of her, and this compilation reflects a consistently high standard of music. Where to next? Who knows, but for now enjoy a richly talented lady’s best work so far.
