Ex-Sneaker Pimper Kelli Ali has been off travelling, the result being her third solo album. It’s quite a departure, notable for its delicacy and love-soaked lyrics, backed up by exquisite orchestration courtesy of producer Max Richter. There are practically no drums, Ali instead exploiting a lilting vocal style and the range of colours available to her from the string and wind instruments Richter employs. Her voice is quite slight, with the lack of electronic dressing, but has developed into a more versatile sound, and finds a sweet vulnerability in the new setting. She may have done an about turn since the raw attitude of the Sneaker Pimps, but is no weaker for the experience.
