Canadian artist Kinny is an enticing prospect. She sounds uncannily like Erykah Badu did around the time of ‘Baduizm’, but goes for a bit more of a jazzy sound, occasionally shot through with roots or soul. Her voice is pretty phenomenal and expresses a lot of emotion, while the varied sound palette comes courtesy of several Tru Thoughts guests – Nostalgia 77, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, TM Juke and Diesler. The latter’s contribution to the off beat ‘Back Street Lust’ is particularly appealing, while Hint’s ‘Afro Love Forest’ works the handclaps to infectious effect. An album to grow with over several listens, as it has more to reveal each time you play it.
