Martin Reeves, aka Krafty Kuts, puts his skills to good use for the latest eclectic free for all in the long-running Back To Mine series. He keeps his selection in the hip-hop-funk arena with Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s T.R.O.Y. kicking off a jumping old school stretch featuring gems by Kenny Dope as Powerhouse 3, electro-vet Captain Rock and the mighty Incredible Bongo Band tackling Iron Butterfly’s In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida [recently heisted by Nas on Hip-Hop Is Dead] before heading into mid-80s electro waters with Paul Hardcastle’s Rainforest and Tyrone Brunson’s The Smurf. Hands now pointed ceiling-wards, the tunes get more diverse with Ed Solo & Skool Of Thought’s We Play The Music, Nas himself and the proto-gogo of the Soul Searchers’ Ashley’s Roachclip [lynchpin of Eric B & Rakim’s I Know You Got Soul]. Reeves can’t be blamed for throwing in a couple of his own and it’s to his credit that Summer Samba and Roll Over Baby with sometime partner Ashley Slater sit so smooth. Add jazz-funk supremo Roy Ayers, Brighton’s Black Grass and Nu Shooz’ immortal I Can’t Wait, the result’s a worthy addition to this mighty, trouser-dropping series.
