Larry Gus is a pretty extraordinary talent, and ‘I Need New Eyes’ is a no holds barred celebration of that. His musical versatility means there is nothing approaching a dull moment on a record that darts between styles, throwing out a few curve balls on the way. ‘NP-Complete’, for instance, works a brilliant bass line while strutting its stuff, while ‘Belong To Love’ throws some shapes that draw from hip hop and skewed jazz. That’s before we even get to the rolling beats of ‘All Graphs Explored’ or the heady start to the album that is ‘Black Veil of Fail’. Gus’s vocals are emotive and sometimes vulnerable but are ultimately positive – as is the whole record, a celebration of music that makes you move. At times Gus is maddening – but he’s also maddeningly talented, and that’s what completely wins through here.
