Another intriguing move for the Heliocentrics, this, as they team up with jazz multi-instrumentalist Lloyd Miller for an appealing concoction of styles and moods. As with their recent Mulatu Astatke compilation, there is focussed improvisation here, and some vivid textures, especially in ‘Spiritual Jazz’, which shimmers with vibraphones, and ‘Lloyd’s Diatribe’, where the pianist gets himself in a spin. Throughout the cross rhythms and syncopations are brilliantly achieved, sometimes very subtle while other times making the foot tap. With seemingly no rules in place, it’s still a tribute to the instrumental forces involved that they have produced such a focussed piece of work. More importantly, it’s something that crosses over effortlessly to draw in fans of the Cinematic Orchestra, Spring Heel Jack and the like. More power to their doubtless aching elbows!
