Marc Romboy

As the brooding chords of ‘The Beat’ ripple across the sound picture one thing is already clear – Marc Romboy is totally in control of where he wants his music to be pitched. This is dark, low frequency house music but still hugely affirming in its powerful beats, big bassy robot vocals and strong, bass-heavy riffing. The vocals are good, too – Blake Baxter’s contribution to the ‘Fly Away’ and K-Alex on the darkly therapeutic ‘EY Mind’ particularly memorable. Elsewhere Romboy’s knack for knowing exactly when to drop the beat or cut the bass serves him well, in an atmospheric city album that, despite its dark moments, has surprising warmth. Without doubt one of the best house long players to date this year.
