MARK MAC
VISIONEERS – DIRTY OLD HIP HOP
BBE

An ironic title, since Mark Mac’s keen sense of orchestration, such a prominent feature of his work as half of 4 Hero, is on display here as he presents some reinterpretations of hip hop staples together with his own new stuff. The old ones are great, and in particular a classy acoustic version of the Pharcyde’s ‘Runnin’ – and his new stuff is good also, a nice acoustic double bass underpinning piano, drums, moog and the occasional vocal. It’s hip hop in a loose term, as Mark adds a dash of samba, bossa and free improv in the surprisingly tasteful xylophone solo of  the Nas-penned ‘The World Is Yours’. An extremely worthwhile venture.
