The music of Matias Aguayo is very ‘base’ – as in a lot of it is guttural, vocally made rhythms. It creates something of a trance, too, especially in a track like ‘Dear Inspector’, where vocal melodies flit in and out of the sound picture over the regular thud of a kind of bass drum. There is always a lot going on with an Aguayo record, and that is definitely the case here, with electronic and human sounds jostling for position. We have the offbeat rumblings of ‘Llego El Don’, the strongly rhythmic ‘Las Cruces’, and A Certain Spirit, the closer, which can be a bit disarming with its claustrophobic vocal, bringing back a poignant Joy Division vocal or two. Aguayo continues to have a lot of original and vital ideas, and this album is the ideal vehicle for his latest. Occasionally challenging, energetic and packed with objects of interest!
