Mattafix
Rhythms And Hymns
Angel

The third Mattafix album is an interesting proposition, a deeply felt blend of hip hop and songwriting with a distinctly cosmopolitan feel, that somehow doesn’t sound contrived. If you can imagine Morcheeba but with and edge, that’s the closest description it seems, as really this outfit are highly original. “Sooner or later we must try living” goes the lyric in ‘Living Darfur’, and it sounds incredibly poignant – whereas the steel pans lift ‘Freeman’ well above the ordinary. A political slant appears now and then to add to the intrigue, while the band’s South African connections are exploited in ‘Memories Of Soweto’. A thoughtful but extremely uplifting album, with a relevant set of messages should you wish to tap into them.
