MATTHEW HERBERT
PLAT DU JOUR
ACCIDENTAL

Matthew Herbert is, shall we say, creative when it comes to his choice of musical instruments on this record. Different sized water bottles? Check. Crunchy apples? Er, check. Chickens and eggs in a jar? Check! All this and more on his latest album, which uses its instruments to make environmental observations without ramming them down your throat. ‘The Truncated Life Of A Modern Industrialised Chicken’ is actually a track of unusual colour and beauty, like the others on this record, staying the right side of madness.
‘Celebrity’ is an intriguing look at celebrities who endorse food, it’s “go David, go Victoria” vocal actually making you dislike them more. A very clever album, this, but one that doesn’t try too hard to keep reminding you how good it is.
