Smalltown Supersound

A real curiosity, this – Mocky’s first release for the ever-adventurous Crammed Discs label. It has an illustrious production list, too, with no less talents than Taylor Savvy, Jamie Lidell and Gonzales all involved. Yet Mocky himself (real name Dominic Salole) has enough musical personality to be easily heard, and he does a fascinating combination of old-style jazz and soul, twinned with newer electronic ways of thinking – yet somehow always sounding analogue, if you get my drift. As a result this is an album that skirts several stylistic boundaries, managing to evade capture but sounding great on stereos set for night time or early morning listening. Salole co-wrote some of the songs on Jamie Lidell’s ‘Multiply’, and if that breezy approach worked for you then this slightly more reserved counterpart ought to go down a treat.
