Mira Calix is an intriguing figure, one of the places where modern classical music and electronic experimentation meet and get on handsomely. She has a real love of the outdoors, too, and that shows in some of the wide open spaces her music occupies. This second part of three contains extracts from a piece commissioned by the Aldeburgh Festival, and two sections created for a video installation. Where it has relevance for lovers of electronic and experimental music is in her skilful play of orchestration and sampled sounds, such as the traffic noises worked in to ’roundabout’. When put on a surround sound system, the full beauty of her textures are revealed, a treat for the later hours.
