Much has been made of how shoegaze is making a comeback with labels like Sonic Cathedral, but it’s borderline insulting to suggest all they’re doing is retreading old ground. Sad Day For Puppets certainly bring back memories of bands like Lush, the mixture of cool vocals and a wall of guitar sound working well over pretty relaxed beats. That said, the Swedes sound a lot better when they get a bit of a groove on and sharpen the guitar sound, a more obviously dancefloor-orientated approach. Singles ‘Cherry Blossom’ and ‘Marble Gods’ are both good examples of the Puppets’ sound, while if you want a wallow in melancholy then ‘Withering Petals And Dust’ is the place to do it. One for blissed out evenings.
