New Build are parts Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem, with Al Doyle – who has previous with both – providing the vocals. Their fusion of Anglo-American electronica works really well – though it does take a couple of listens before the songs start to burn themselves into your consciousness. For electronic music this is an unusually emotive album, tapping into the sort of songs Junior Boys write but with a bit more assertiveness at work. This can best be heard in the album’s closing title track, but there are other gems long before that in the subtly majestic ‘The Sunlight’ or ‘White Sea’, which has impressive strength in depth. ‘Weightless’, too, brings across something of the group’s thoughtful approach – though in their beats there is plenty of energy too. These are really strong songs that deserve the chance to grow, and form the basis of a record which to me is as good as any Hot Chip record of late.
