The title is the birthday of Glasgow producer and sometime Separatist Marco Bernardi’s newborn son. Here’s his other baby – a truly astonishing debut album which more than lives up to the promise of the ‘CSide’ single. It’s fairly obvious that Marco has a thing for Detroit greats like Mayday, UR and Craig, also early 90s UK acolytes like the Dog and B12. Textures flicker and soar, strings sigh and ethereal melodies glide. There’s also little reliance on the banging 4/4 groove. Tracks like the euphorically-gorgeous Carl Craig tribute ‘With Respect…? establish their own inner pulse with multi-tiered washes of heavenly synth variations. There are nods to the electro-crashibngs he’s turned in for Clone, but this is mainly pure techno of the deepest level, elevated the man’s soul and personality. And next single ‘Soulsearcher’ is the best UR homage to yet come out of this country. Soma start the New Year with this. Here they go again!
