The one time Platinum Pied Pipers, now PPP, prove that relocating to Brooklyn hasn’t diluted that Detroit bounce for “Abundance”, their second long player. Groups that hit hard with a debut album can sometimes be tempted to retread the same route, re-arranging words and sounds to fit that winning formula (and “Triple P” was so good that wouldn’t really be a bad thing). No chance of that with “Abundance” though. Stylistically, it’s much more dynamic, showcasing a sound that’s progressed to where it feels just right yet is still keen to experiment – Motown re-fixed, gospel re-sprayed, funk re-jigged – PPP introduce your speakers to the type of soulful vibes they’ve only ever dreamed of. Listen to the wonderful “On A Cloud”, a storming slice of modern pop-soul, easily wiping the floor with Duffy or Amy, or “Go Go Go”, impossibly light and catchy for such a heavy boompty beat, and the 70’s Kraftwerk stylings of “Goodbye”. And you know what? There’s a whole album packed with nuggets like this. Get ahead of the pack and pick up one of the highlights of 2009 before it makes the end of year charts. PPP are the kings of electro-soul.
