Few of DFA’s acts have divided opinion as much as Prinzhorn Dance School, and their second album ‘Clay Class’ is unlikely to change that opinion. It does however build on what they’ve already achieved, which is a good vocal chemistry between Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn, and introduces some strong lyrical couplets. Sometimes, though, the feeling is a bit half pat, as if the duo are purposely not putting the effort in – which is of course a big part of their musical style, which sometimes takes The Cure as inspiration. ‘Your Fire Has Gone Out’ is stronger, with a bold bass hook that stretches out for a while. Some of the lyrics are more descriptive this time around, with ‘Crisis Team’ speaking of the arrival of winter, and The Flora And Fauna Of Britain In Bloom having some unexpectedly tender asides. The music may lack energy at times, but it’s distinctive. A Marmite album, maybe, but decent enough.
