Quantic – Magnetica – (Tru Thoughts)

It’s well documented that Will Holland, the man behind Quantic, has drawn masses of inspiration from his time spent in Colombia – and in a sense ‘Magnetica’ displays the fruits of his labours. But there is a lot more to Holland than the music of a country to which he has become deeply attached, and this album reflects the cosmopolitan nature of his life, bringing electronic music to the fore but with some fascinating songs and by-products. There are some English-based songs, with the catchy and breezy ‘You Will Return’ an early highlight with Alice Russell, and ‘Painting Silhouettes’ a wistful closing track, but the real meat on the album comes from extended jams such as ‘Muevelo Negro’, which propels itself into a trance, and the trumpet-led ‘Sol Clap’, an absolute treat. Holland works with local musicians but keeps his musical remit as free as possible – and ‘Magnetica’ reflects his freedom in multi-layered music that reveals more every time you listen to it. Very highly recommended!
