It all adds up – this is 2020 Vision’s 200th release, made by their founder Carl Finlow under his recording alias of Random Factor. It’s his third long player for the label, and arguably his best, completing a trilogy of albums begun in 1998 with ‘Too Fast For The Future’. ‘Outlaw’ takes a little while to bed in, with some smoky textures broken up by off beat bleeps and other nocturnal noises, but soon the beats take hold, reassuringly full in their presence as the cool, dark and deep sounds also assert themselves. The title track, ‘Knockabout’ and ‘Digitize’ are especially fine, but the album works best when experienced in its entirety, the sounds of a city at night inescapably vivid. An exceptionally fine record.
