Brooklyn’s Ratatat pair of Mike Stroud and Evan Mast have clearly heard a lot of music in their time. LP3 incorporates all manner of styles into their electronic casing, seemingly comfortable with tabla, guitar or synthesizer. It means that although this is an instrumental album, there’s plenty still to savour. ‘Shiller’ is an ambitious opener with orchestral pretensions, while the clangy piano and pinball beats of ‘Bird Priest’ are a perfect match. This lifts little elements of recent Daft Punk as well as instrumental music from the 70s, all placed against danceable beats that combine a bit of style and humour. All very interesting.
