‘Iffy’, the third album from Bavarian producer Recondite, is a compelling listen on headphones. This is because Recondite is really clever with his minimal use of textures, forcing the ear to listen closely to the softly brushed riffs and drum tracks. This is techno at its best, both intimate in the case of the atmospheric textures of ‘Baro’ and ‘Levo’ (the minimal titles give clue to the music!), or powering forward with a bit more dancefloor intent in the really nice ‘Glint’, towards the end of the album. In listening terms it’s like eating a bar of pretty rare dark chocolate – with the emphasis on the dark – while in the right club all the smoky textures so thoughtfully put together by Recondite will surely come to the fore.
