Stonephace is the latest venture for the legendary Larry Stabbins, founder of 80’s Brit-jazz outfit Working Week, and something of a leading figure on the UK jazz circuit. He’s teamed up with Portishead’s Adrian Utley and Jim Barr, and beat alchemist Krzystof Oktalski, to create psychedelic jazz of face melting proportions, one part hip-hop, one parts jazz, the rest crazed funk that some record diggers spend most of the record fiending lives looking for. Evidently taking it’s cue from the recent works of Madlib, Ras G, Malcom Catto, Heliocentrics, etc, but creating a unique modern jazz based sound that could only come out of an independent like Brighton’s Tru Thoughts. Stunning music – tracks to check are the funky “Five Miles High” and freakout “Stonephace”.
