Italian/Serbian producer Radovan Scasascia is part of Soul Jazz’s new wave of electronic subversives, among those showcased on the Soul Jazz Singles CD. Crucially, what he’s up to sounds genuinely while remaining absolutely respectful to [and often invoking] dance music’s grand tradition. He constructs his tracks using thousands of micro-samples from anything from classic New York disco to modern minimal, ending up with an intoxicating hybrid while never losing sight of the funk. Take a track like ‘Solstice’, where early 80s boogie rears out of techno drone momentum or the JB’s flavour popping up in the grainy tech-funk of ‘Wait For It To Come’. It’s an exhilarating, sometimes jaw-dropping sonic tapestry he’s weaving here but equally capable of diving deep into more avant garde waters on ‘Fine Primo Tempo’. An amazing debut.
