Major tune ahoy! For sheer heart-stopping impact achieved by emotion,
subtlety and warmth, the second single from Glaswegian duo Mark Flanagan and
Gordon MacDermid takes some beating. Their debut was a promo seven-inch
called ‘Puggies’ which Manchester’s Piccadilly Records made record of the
week. Trailering the amazing Carnivalesque album, this is on twelve only,
the only way to fully appreciate the layers of melody and soothing textures
which resonate and build with swirling poignancy into a euphoric roof-raiser
maybe like Orbital or Black Dog would unleash in the early 90s. They
incorporate acoustic instruments, including drums, which maybe explains the
extra soul quotient. The remixers are a stamp of quality in themselves –
Black Dog turning the main melody into an ethereal monster which plunges and
soars before Kird Degiorgio turns in a classic techno rework with old school
Detroit percussion and heavenly breakdown. There’s also a slower, denser
cyber-trawl from Dextro which puts the lid on it. Undoubtedly one of the
records of the year.
