Simon Baker’s debut album has been keenly anticipated for a while now, and having dropped it is a pleasure to confirm it well worth the wait. He presents himself as a versatile producer, able to move between deep house and techno boundaries and more disco-influenced stuff with relative ease. As a result the album is organic and varied, its highlights including ‘No Pressure’, which breezes by in a manner Todd Edwards would be proud of, and the especially fine ‘Let Me In’, with its hook complaining that “you won’t let me in your house”. Add to that the smooth, deep contours of ‘L Train’, ‘Someone Like?’, which lets its piano do the talking, and the sultry garage-house of ‘Olek’, and you have a consistently strong and rewarding piece of work.
