Tru Thoughts

The thought of a concept albums is usually something to be wary of. When it’s the institution that is (DJ) Hell at the controls, though, it’s something to anticipate and marvel at. Split across two discs, “Night” and “Day”, the music allows Hell to get deep and explore the ghosts of his record collection and influences over 16 tracks, including guest vocals from Bryan Ferry(!) and P Diddy (!!). Don’t jump to conclusions, though, as both the tracks they feature on – “U Can Dance” and “”The DJ” respectively – are standouts amongst a strong album, a seductive combination of elegant cool and raw club power. And, look underneath the homage to Chicago, Detroit, New York and Germany via house, techno, spaced out disco and electro, it’s the attention to detail, the reverence, the sheer passion that shines through, giving Hell’s work that depth that some modern electronic music aims lacks. If this is the devil’s work, then it must be true – the devil does have all the best tunes.
