If you love the sounds purveyed by fine labels like Chez, Large, Madhouse, Shelter, King Street, Guidance, Basement Boys, Nervous, NRK, Masters At Work and Planet E (of course) and like your house uplifting, positive, spiritual and full of the joys of life then look no further, because Detroit house pioneer, Terrence Parker’s ‘Life On The Back 9’ is all of that and a bag of chips.
In his own words, Terrence says : ‘the album is about moving through hard times in life to see something beautiful on the other side of difficulties’ and this he has certainly done with this, his third artist album for Planet E. It’s an album of impeccably crafted grooves, luxurious vocals, positive vibes and bouncing, crunchy happy beats : listen to it on headphones and float away from your troubles, dance to it in a club and jack your body instead. There is a glittering array of smoking, sultry vocals and hammond / piano powered instrumentals to suit every mood and situation.
Tracks like ‘Night Light’, ‘Saved Forever’, ‘GOD He Is’ and ’Spiritual Warfare’, Terrence will have the soulful house massive worshipping at the Sunday Morning house altar whilst the vocal tracks ‘Finally (Baby Be Mine), ‘Hiding In Your Love’ and ‘Open Up Your Spirit’ are special treatq for your ears and your feet.
So what exactly is the Back 9? Of this Terrence says : ” … my father told me about one of his golf games where the first 9 holes (also known as the “front 9”) seemed to be the worst he had ever played. It was so bad he felt like packing his clubs and leaving the course. However my father paused, prayed, and decided to finish the game. As he began playing the last 9 holes of the course (also known as the “back 9”), he could see gradual improvement in his game as he advanced each hole. By the end of the game my father had done so well he won the entire match. My father then said to me, “Terrence if you think of your life as a game of golf, perhaps the front 9 did not go as you had liked. But don’t give up because you still have the back 9.”
