THE SEPARATISTS
AKILAK
SOMA

Percy X was in there during the early days of Soma, firing out arresting electro-techno mutants and turning in roof-rattling DJ sets anywhere from Slam to Sabresonic. Recently he’s hitched up with Marco Bernardi and John Hospital to form the Separatists and, after a trio of scorching EPs, they appear with their debut album. The thing that hits at first is how many diverse electronic strains are running amok here – Detroit techno in riffs, strings and soul, electro in grooves like ‘Version 4’, 90s European techno in the title track. The original warped repetition definition of minimal occurs on second single ‘Bug Rider’ while the stripped-down modern creature hisses through ‘Krokit’. These are thrown into such a lively blender that it’s entirely their own sound and vision on display. There is electronic expertise a-plenty here but the soul and joy of likeminds colliding and sparking off each other elevates the music into heady regions indeed.
