At the age of 23 and from the West Midlands, Rob Jones aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme, sat down to dinner on Christmas day with various family members, and as they ate, drank and pulled crackers, they listened to a Tamla Motown compilation. After dinner the inspired young master Jones went straight to his bedroom studio set up and wrote a near perfect pop song. “Tobasco Sole” is one uplifting hook after another, all blazing in slightly psychedelic sunshine with a big nod to The Jackson 5. The verses are nonsense bubblegum call and response, “Put the dog outside, put the devil in the oven on high”, and the choruses are irresistible sing a long “Something in the way you move…Do do do do do do do”. What I’d like to know is what did Uncle Theo put in the stuffing.
