The Whitest Boy Alive are a Berlin-based quartet fronted by Erlend Oye, who
you’ll know as half of Kings Of Convenience. Their music takes a lot from
the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly with their Cure-style bass
lines, but Oye lends it a subtle emotional depth. ‘Above You’ finds an
unexpected poignancy, and even when Oye is not singing the intricate
arrangements work really well, providing an ambient base for the listener
along with a strongly propelled groove. Very cool – without obviously
trying.
