Richard Thair & Jake One are Toob, both of them were part of Red Snapper, and Richard was also in The Aloof. The dynamic duo are laying down the finishing touches to their second album, and what we have here is a limited sampler with a self explanatory title. ‘Freakonometry’ gets the show on the road, coming over like a fuzzy electro infused mix of a funky Beck track, before tailing off with some distant sweet guitar licks. ‘Offset’ has got a certain ‘Colder’ doing a cyber spy soundtrack feel about it, and wouldn’t sound out of place on Trevor Jackson’s Output. Meanwhile ‘Something Takes Hold’ could be a fucked up Soulwax and knocks on the DFA door, as Jake One sneers ‘Shouting at the stars, sha na na na’. This rather neat sampler closes with ‘The Toob Show’, a slightly creepy affair, that gets under your skin and somehow manages to lift you, in a strange bowling down the street on a rainy day kind of way. Don’t know when this Toob album is coming out, but if I were you, I’d certainly keep an eye out for one of these samplers.
