The score to a classic us-versus-them battle, where youth fights the system through music. Instead of reaching for a range of reggae compliments, ‘Babylon’ is more or less Dennis Bovell’s own pet project – witness his 10 inclusions out of 17 letting only Aswad, Michael Prophet, I-Roy, Yabby U and Cassandra have a go as well. The music doesn’t enter into the spirit of antagonism you’d imagine the film relies upon, instead contentedly longing for nicer weather than present and bearing out as a handy compilation 25 years down the line.
