Something of a new direction for Zero 7 is heralded by ‘Yeah Ghost’, in the way it works with faster music, more percussion and a swing of the hips to give them a new found versatility. That’s not to say they’ve completely abandoned their ambient roots – as they can still work a smooth piece of chill out music to fine effect – but something like ‘Ghost sYMbOL’ will be a shock to anyone that had them pigeon holed, with its distorted vocals from a ‘Jackie Daniels’ and some scattered electronic sounds. While not all the tracks are a success, this is the record that looks set to project Zero 7’s musical adventures in to unexplored fields, tracking their influences of soul, Motown and more broken up electronica. It will be interesting to see where they head next.
