After establishing their take on bass music using trap and juke influences, with releases on labels such as Embassy, T & A and Party Like Us, the Charlotte , North Carolina duo, Clicks & Whistles, drops some fresh vibes on their latest EP. On “2 Much Higher” we hear a somewhat deeper and moodier sound than their previous efforts, with elements of drum n’ bass sneaking in here and there. This deeper style isn’t totally surprising as this release come from Symbols Recordings, the relatively new label from producer/DJ Kastle, and the sound of the imprint is mostly focused deep soulful vibes.

The title cut and the XI remix are my faves here. The original strikes nerves reminiscent of old school dark UKG with its dope drum programming, but still stays fresh with the spacey, emotive synths and vocal chops. Berlin’s XI checks in with a remix that is really nice and groovy, makes me wanna smoke a blunt and vibe out with no lights and boomin’ speakers. “Hightower” gets super shuffle-y with the breaks and has a cool future bending melody. On “Waiting 4” the dn’b aspects are the most obvious and while I strongly dislike dn’b in general, I’m feeling this tune and can see it getting a decent amount of play as a fun DJ tool. Overall a slick four tracker here, get with it!
