Compiled by Optimo’s JD Twitch, Kreaturen Der Nacht is a superb selection of music that might be more than 30 years old, but which still has a vitality and originality making it ideal for today. There is a strong sense of discovery in tracks like Malaria!’s ‘Your Turn To Run’, which has the sort of urgency that makes you want to dance immediately. Meanwhile the steel guitar twang to Die Haut’s ‘Der Karibische Western’ makes for a distinctive meeting of minds, while the grubby bass and loose beat of Exkur’s ‘Fakten’ is also a thrill. There is a brilliant, punchy kind of funk to JD Twitch’s own edit of Christiane F.’s ‘Wunderbar’, but arguably the best of all is saved until near the end, Stefan Blöser’s ‘Voyager One’ being one of those space-themed instrumentals you want to play again and again. This is a compilation in which to discover a lot of great new music you didn’t know before.
