TheGround is a new collaboration between Berlin’s Florian Kruse and vocalist Hendrik Burkhard, and it is a mighty fine achievement. Kruse’s moody production explores the middle ground between house and techno but throws in some nice, meticulously crafted trance loops now and then too. Burkhard puts just as much thought into his lyrics, raising songs like ‘Undercover’ well above your average song-based floor filler. The loops on ‘Through The Darkness’ work really well, while the reflective ‘Crack In The Wall’, featuring vocalist Mi.li.an, is another high point. This is really atmospheric music helped by a solid rhythmic undercarriage, hitting the sweet spot with each of its understated but surprisingly powerful songs.
