The promise of Lateef & Chief Xcel getting their warpaint on and going bushwhacking is a thrilling prospect. ‘Ambush’ lies in wait, lies in wait a bit longer…and declines to burst out with all guns blazing. No matter, this is Solesides militia to the core – digable funk, loops to pop collars to, those always regimental deliveries that never waste a syllable, and the capacity to apply political pressure (‘If’) in the same, smallish set that drops tender smokescreens (‘Beautiful You’). Maroons tow the Lyrics Born/Gift of Gab line and maintain Quannum’s consistency.
