Get all of the jokes out of your system about McEnroe being destined to rhyme about how “chalk flew up” and understand that this McEnroe reaches for words from the same backpack as Slug, Buck65, Josh Martinez etc – Canadian smartness/smugness, mixing pill-popped enthusiasm with shoulder-shrugging dourness. To the drowse of psychedelic smudges and half-wasted hippyness (smoke clouds rather than De la Soul dayglo) on the boards, ‘Five Years’ tests the endurance like a five-setter but serves a few aces along the way (there, said it).
