Usual skewered work from Roots with his alt.production that seems to owe more to acid house or Rephlex than regular hip hop. He’s unapologetic as ever: “I don’t give a damn about UK rap, I’m a UK black making UK tracks.” Royksopp come in with a sparkly mix that’s slaps an electro bassline over a wannabe Tosca/Dorfmeister production. The Part 2 Remix (by Roots?) is one of those ultra heavy b-line and fx garage dubs with a cloak of the finest grime. Although it’s a bit slow and ponderous. The other mixes are cool and a tad experimental – maybe too experimental – so you get dancehall but its not quite full throttle. The best is Jammer & Mizzs Beatz Remix which suggests vintage Rick James or Prince with that madly dizzy 80s electronic funk sound. A cool package but you can’t help wishing just one mix knocked back a six-pack or a line of speed and just went totally mental.
