Bob Barker – Broken Labour EP – (Catch)

British newcomer Bob Barker might maintain a pretty elusive front, but clichés aside, he’s an individual who’d much rather let the music do the talking. And when they’re as impressive as they are here, that’s a fair deal for all involved. His latest then, comes to light on Catch Recordings, a similarly burgeoning label with a propensity for unusual and discerning sounds. The Broken Labour EP kicks off with ”Rondel”, an ominous slice of ghoulish house that’s notable for its pulverizing acid-line and its series of emotive bells. Eerie enough it could land itself in a soundtrack, it cut well have found itself in Warp’s back catalogue if we didn’t know any better. Ryan Davis’ remix meanwhile, is no less impressive. He uses the original’s vibes expertly, as he reinterprets the track into a more driving battle-weapon. ”Firbeck” is the second of the originals. This time, Barker keeps the emphasis on a no-fuss attitude once more, as he allows a snippet of light to enter the fray. Otherwise, it’s a pretty stripped-back minimal effort – and one that’s ripe for remixing. Enter Greenville Massive, who put a new spin on things; as they beef it up with an elongated bassline that does just enough to draw the listener in.
