Claus Casper, Matchy & Bott – Source Of Funk EP

Naming your latest EP The Source of Funk EP could be inviting a host of criticism if the release in question doesn’t live up to its billing. Fortunately, no such issues overshadow the works of Claus Casper and Matchy & Bott, a trio who’ve really come up smelling of roses here courtesy of an EP that, essentially, does exactly what it says on the tin. With two tracks – each one of dizzying effectiveness on show – this isn’t an EP that’ll win prizes for subtlety. Even so, that’s essentially the point, and it’s obvious from the off that what we’re being introduced to here is a release that’s made for the night’s most full-on hours. Of the two tracks, both pack a real punch, but it’s the opener, ‘The Funk’, that really wins a thumbs up from me. Sounding like it’s calling on some really clever samples, it gyrates with an epic sheen, whilst its clever guitar licks give it an extra oomph to boot. ‘The Source’ is a slightly different beast. Notable for its elongated bassline and its watery synths, it wobbles with all the confidence of a production pair who known they’ve hit the sweet spot.
