Some lively stuff from the Cobblestone quartet, made while holed up in a Berlin studio working on their Modern Deep Left Quartet material. ‘Before This’ is pretty fast for them, somewhere near the 135bpm mark, and zips along with plenty of melodic threads to latch on to. For starters there is some nice off beat organ to go with the sharper main riff, before they segue in to a nice bit of piano work – all with some nice Latin percussion around the edges. ‘Before That’ is the same speed but cooler, the keyboard work more muffled as if played early in the morning. Whichever of the two you choose, you’ll have some rather appealing deep house, with a touch of mellow on the flip side.
