Doctor Dru doesn’t release all that often, but when he does he tends to do so with real guile and panache. Up first on his latest EP on Jeudi is the title track, The Grain. A full fat bit of booming house music with heavyweight kicks, meaty percussive stabs and a rolling baseline that will make dancefloors sweat, it’s inidcative of a side of his that we rarely see, almost as though he decided to adopt a more serious demeanour with this one.
Next up is The Pattern, with its dry, crunchy hats and fantastically roaming bassline. All hunched up, this one is a subtler shifter but is still prime dancing fodder. A steely, teeth clenching tech grinder with squelchy textures, mechanical grooves and deep kick drums, it’s similarly ominous and a thrilling and freaky affair from the off. If it’s intricate tech-house that’s your bag, then prepare to fawn over Dru’s latest.
