Freaks Vs. Robert Owens
Right Now
Rebirth

The combination of Luke Solomon and Justin Harris’ mighty Freaks and house music’s greatest male singer can only be a winner, but this spectacular package from Italy’s relentlessly great Rebirth exceeds all expectations. This ‘lost’ track has only previously appeared on a couple of compilation albums but now sees the light of day with a couple of storming remixes to boot. The original sets up a driving, acid-flecked groove given extra exotic dimension via trumpet and cello icing. As the Dubstrumental shows, the track would be monstrous just like that; add Owens on top form, uncurling that inimitable voice with all the emotion, vulnerability and pure soul which made songs like ‘Tears’ such unusually moving landmarks. The result is up there with his best, proving once again that nobody else can send shivers down the spine like this man. The two new remixes are sympathetic and monstrous in their own right, Sao Paulo’s Glocal adding old school piano, haunting strings and percussion to the existing re-arranged and heightened elements, while Rotciv’s Re-Edit ups the disco quotient to delirious effect with late 80s deepness. Sometimes words don’t seem to do justice to records like this gem which simply seems to drip with everything that was great and soulful about true house music.
