In which we continue the welcome back to house music for Matthew Herbert, surely one of the most talented and original producers of music of his generation. Herbert’s decision to go back to house is yielding some great results, and on the Part 8 EP the first-principles robotic house of ‘The Wrong Place’ is worked out with surgical precision and some great vocals. ‘Remember Ken’ works really well with its line ‘everybody just wants to be heard’ and some subtly shaded strings that Herbert has always been so good at writing in, while ‘Ticket’ is more restless yet pretty driving at times. The real winner of the four is the last track ‘Her Face’, expertly worked with a brilliant riff and a fidgety beat. It’s great to have him back in the house!
