Hercules & Love Affair – I Try To Talk To You – (Big Beat)

Hercules and Love Affair return with ‘I Try to Talk To You’ – the first release from their third album which sees them growing impressively and gaining in artistic strength and stature. The lyrical content here is heavyweight in the extreme – subject is singing about receiving an HIV positive result. Underpinning this subject matter is a marriage of high drama and lo-fi electro. In its original inception – ‘I Try to Talk To You’ is a hazy, low slung electro affair that gets jiggy with John Grant’s mellow, crispy, dry vocal and the symphonically scored pianos and strings. It twists itself around an emotional, romantic piano sweep that could wring tears out of the eyes of a peacock’s many feathers. Metro Area’s Morgan Geist nails it down with a protective deep house force field, working and blending its sweeping strings, heart rending pianos into a pumping bass line led anthem. Seth Troxler delivers a slick and polished revamp well worthy of mention but the major work is already done. This package is a tantalising tease indeed. Roll on the live Hercules sessions.
