Phil Weeks – 909 Tools EP – Robsoul Recordings

Number four in Phil Weeks series of limited edition vinyl EP’s is an exercise in self-indulgence which we can all share in. The clue being in the title as four explorations of the classic drum machine are put to the test, each taken from a different angle. ‘Acid Pattren’ kicks off with no nonsense drums and acid attitude repeated over the course of some six and a half minutes, feeling obviously retrospective but also strangely current joining the reference points between then and then. ‘Sunday Groove’ plays with a sense of melody via its timely Disco loop and big splashing hi-hats, while ‘Hooked On U’ twists funky horns around cool syncopated bass and vocal touches proving this to be the most accessible cut. ‘Harlem Shuffle’ finishes with more timely funk stretched out over a blend of Toms and shuffling rhythms. Aimed primarily as a DJ’s mixing tool this all works in its own right for the more creative thinker…
