Shur-i-kan – Horse Play EP – (Dark Energy)

I didn’t quite expect this burst of sonic energy in the shape of ‘Bird man’ from Shur-i-kan but this stunning sequence of Minimalist electronics is more akin to the American composers of the genre and sounds all the more impressive for it. The repeating keys continually draw you in as the vocal loops add a real sense of urgency to the arrangement, while eventually the drums remind you of their presence – a great piece of music. As is the EP’s title track which bangs out four on the floor beats, superbly Jazzy chords and a satisfying taste of expectation that hits target. Finally, ‘After Hours’ sounds suitably late-night with piano lines and funkier percussion creating the perfect Film Noir backdrop to end this excellent set.
